The Old Fortress

The Old Fortress of Corfu is one of the most impressive fortification projects in Europe and the jewel of the island. It is the first place to capture your eyesight, as the ferry approaches Corfu. It stands on the eastern side of the town, on a rocky peninsula that spreads into the sea.

This fortress is called Old in contrast to the New Fortress (of Saint Mark), that was also built to protect the town from enemies and pirates.

The building of the fortress was initiated in the early 10th century and was completed in the 17th century after the terrible siege by Hayreddin Barbarossa in 1537. Today, it houses the Archives of Corfu Island, the Public library of Corfu, the music research lab of the Ionian University and Saint George ’s church. The entrance to the fortress is from the side of Spianada square.
